Volunteering In Mexico – 3 minute read 2

As I am sitting here in my apartment, slowly counting down the days until I depart for Tapachula, Mexico to begin my volunteer mission for Mision Mexico, I have quite a few things running through my head.

Many people have asked if I am crazy or insane to even think about leaving sunny Hermosa Beach California and venture into a part of the world that is “unsafe” or “unsavory”.

My response is this:  I have grown up quite differently than most people grew up in America.  I have experienced more in my short 33 years of life than most will experience in a lifetime.  I am saying this not to compare my life with anyone, but I am saying that as a reference point as to why I choose to uproot my entire life, sell everything I own, and move to a place for 6 months where most people wouldn’t even visit with a carry-on and a laptop.

Everyday I wake up, I am thankful for another day, another breath and another amazing chance to do something memorable and worthwhile with my life.  We each have the same ability to do more.  We just need to be able recognize that on a daily basis and be willing to be uncomfortable in order to grow as human beings.

Today, I was fortunate enough to ride my bike down the Hermosa Beach Strand and grab a bite to eat on the Hermosa Beach Pier.  I will definitely miss the opportunity to do the little things I do everyday in Southern California, but I feel it is my duty to give back to the world as a whole and improve the lives of those who are less fortunate than I am.

Most people live their entire lives without really living… And I choose NOT to be one of those people.

I choose to be uncomfortable.  I choose to give more than I take.  I choose to be the light where there is none…

What do you choose to be?
